“It’s never a bad time to start a business unless you are starting a mediocre business.”
– Gary Vaynerchuk
Bad economy? Bullshit.
There’s no such thing as a bad time for any business, no matter the industry or focus. Talented people fail, lackluster people succeed, and the only rhyme to the reason has to do with drive, passion and the motivating force behind the business.
Look at the difference between a healthy businesses and a failing one and you’ll discover the following: If your business focus is ME, ME, ME, you’ll crash and burn. If you simply like the idea of owning your own business (as in, you like how people will see you) you’ll get tired or lose interest, or you won’t be able to muster up support from people around you. Create something that contributes to people’s lives, however, and support is everywhere. People BEG to be a part of what you are creating, and you yourself find your work is much like play – it’s effortless and fun.
I was very nervous when I decided to open my first yoga studio nine years ago. The day that I quit my last day job, scared but excited, I sat down with my parents, fairly convinced that they would HATE the idea. Instead, my dad looked me in the eye and said, “Honey, it’s about time you shit or get off the pot.” He knew somehow that I was committed and in it to change lives, and was ready to support me in my dream (even though he’d once hoped I’d be an accountant). Not only did my dad find my first yoga space for me, but he and my mom became employees. (And every year they ask me for a raise). The studio is still thriving in the original location.
Start a business in any economy with contribution at its heart, and the world will come running to support you. Don’t wait for the economy to come around. Don’t wait for anything. Do it now. If it’s an exceptional idea with exceptional heart, you will have all you need to succeed.
